What is a Monohull/ Sailing Yacht?

A Monohull is a type of boat that has only one hull as opposed to Multihull one which can have two or more hulls connected to one another. Monohulls are typically fitted with a fixed or adjustable keel below the waterline to counterbalance the overturning force of wind on the vessel’s mast & sails.

Sailing yachts belong to the monohull category & can sail using either their sails or an auxiliary engine (or even both). Since the motive force is the wind, such boats are more economical and environmentally friendly than any other type of boat. Sailing yachts are considered not only all-weather vessels but also the safest ones. The feature of such a boat is the total tranquility and freedom you feel when you sail without the noise of the engine. Let’s see some special features of them.

Sample Layout of a 50ft Sailing Yacht (Ocean Star 51.2)

Sailing boats can range in overall length from about 6m/ 20 Feet to 30m/ 100 Feet. Sailboats around 6m/ 20 feet do not even have a cabin since they are designed for daily use. Yachts around 9m/ 30 feet are mostly single-masted & usually equipped with a simple cabin and a small saloon area with bed-space. The most common category is sailing yachts around 10m/ 35 feet to 15m/ 50 feet. They are mostly single-masted yachts equipped with 2 to 4 cabins, 1 to 4 WC (some of them have plus a skipper’s single cabin with its own WC) and saloon area with galley space. Needless to say that bigger sailing yachts which belong to the “luxury” category offer almost everything to the guest.

Although a sailboat's interior depends on the boat size & type, modern sailing yachts (around 50ft) usually have comfortable interiors with plenty of storage space & spacious cabins.

Their equipment
depends also on the yacht’s size and type. However, they may include from just the necessary to computer-controlled electric winches, air conditioning, television system, radars, echo-sounding, autopilot, GPS (Global Positioning System), hot and pressured water systems, refrigerators, comfortable cabins & salons, toilets, shower rooms etc.

There is a great variety of yachts that people can choose for bareboat or skippered sailing holidays in Greece. Their size ranges from 10m (approx. 30 Feet) to 17m (approx. 56 Feet). Equipped with 1 to 6 cabins & WC, they can accommodate 4 to 12 guests & achieve a quite good cruising speed (6 to 14 knots depending on the boat).
