Lefkada island in the Ionian (Eptanisa) sailing area:

Lefkada island belongs to the “Eptanisa“, an island complex that lies in the Ionian Sea. Despite being one of the most popular destinations in Greece, Lefkada remains quite undeveloped and authentic. It is a peaceful sailing holiday spot with safe waters, unique landscapes and much green. It is considered best for family and relaxed vacations. The Prefecture of Lefkada consists of Lefkada and the surrounding small islands of Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Skorpios, Skorpidi, Madouri, Sparti, Thileia and Kythros. It is the only island linked to the mainland of Greece by a narrow causeway and a floating bridge 50m in length.
Lefkada is a large and mountainous island covered with fertile valleys, dense vegetation and sheer rocky cliffs.
The capital, also called Lefkada, is a tranquil and picturesque town built on a natural harbour. It has to offer both modern and traditional elements and many possibilities for shopping, walking and entertainment. Fishing villages such as Nidri and Agios Nikitas offer just the different style. Nidri is the most cosmopolitan and crowded village of the island built along the beach. Agios Nikitas is one of the most popular villages that offers a distinctive small bay and delicious sea-food. Off the beaten track, you will find villages best for relaxing, careless and private vacations.
Regarding nightlife, the island has a wide variety of bars, nightclubs and cafes. Most of them offer relaxed entertainment with low music next to the beach. The “heavy” night life is gathered mostly in Nidri and Vassiliki where tourists drink and dance till dawn. There are also several restaurants and taverns that make very good cooking in Agios Nikitas, Vassiliki, Nidri and especially in the mountain villages.
Shopping in Lefkada is good and varies from top designer labels and exquisite jewellery to fine antiques and high quality leather goods. Most shops are located at the main commercial street very close to the port and the marina in Lefkada town and in other villages/ places such as Nidri and Vassiliki.

The island of Lefkada is reputed for the marvellous, long sandy beaches with crystal, clear waters. The beaches of Porto Katsiki and Egremnoi SW will take your breath away with their imposing beauty and their turquoise blue waters. Other nice beaches are also Agios Nikitas, Kathisma, Nikiana, Agios Ioannis, Mikros Gialos, Pefkoulia and Vassiliki. Some of them are well organized offering good standards of facilities.

Weather conditions / Climate in Lefkas island:

During the summer and especially in August the prevailing wind is the so-called Maistro which blows from North-West usually at force 2-5 Beaufort scale. What sailors love more in Lefkas is that the light wind arrives around noon and dies at sunset without creating waves.
The climate in Lefkada island is the typical Mediterranean. It is characterised by hot and sunny summers and mild winters with more rainfalls compared to the rest of Greece. Lefkada has a higher level of humidity as well, though in summer it applies only to the area north of Lefkas.

Moorings & Anchorages in Lefkas island/ Ionian islands:

The new Lefkada Marina, right next to the town and the main port, is one of the most modern marinas in the Mediterranean. It provides up to date service and high standard of amenities for the yachtsmen visitors (with an expensive dock fee though).
Anchorages: The entire coastline of Lefkas (with the exception of the West coast) is full of protected bays and anchorages.
Keep in mind: Lefkas marina in Lefkas island and Gouvia marina in Corfu island are our charter bases for the Ionian islands.

History / Places of interest in Lefkada island:

The oldest evidence of human settlement on the island is from the Neolithic period. In the 7th BC the town of Lefkas was built by Corinthians, who first cut a channel opposite the Santa Maura Fort and constructed the 600m long mole at the south end of the lagoon, remains of which are “the sunken breakwater”. In the middle Ages the island belonged to the barons of Kefalonia and Zakynthos. In 1479 the Turks invaded Lefkas – the only Ionian Island to fall into their hands – but Morosini in 1684 recovered Lefkas for Venice.
As a result of the frequent changes in its history and of a series of earthquakes (the last one was in 1953) Lefkas has preserved very few traditional buildings and lost its original style of architecture.

There is a wealth of amphitheatres, historical sites and monuments to explore around the island of Lefkada and many museums such as the Museum of Gramophones, the Naval Museum and the Archaeological Museum.
Churches and monasteries worth visiting are the church of Christou Pantokratora and the monastery of Panagia Faneromeni.

Activities in Lefkada island:

Lefkada island is the absolute paradise for windsurfing lovers. The beach of Vassiliki and Aghios Ioannis are among the ten best beaches worldwide for such activity. Both cover all needs for windsurfing and other water sports such as scuba diving and sea kayaking. In Nydri, there is a well-organised water sports centre, with expertise, experience and complete modern equipment.
There are lots of possibilities so as to rent a car, motorbike or bike.
